91.1 Job Was Wealthy And Pious

(Job 1:1-5)

There was a man named Job, living in the land of Uz, who worshiped God and was faithful to him. He was a good man, careful not to do anything evil. He had seven sons and three daughters, and owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, one thousand heads of cattle, and five hundred donkeys. He also had a large number of servants and was the richest man in the East.

Job's sons used to take turns giving a feast, to which all the others would come, and they always invited their three sisters to join them. The morning after each feast, Job would get up early and offer sacrifices for each of his children in order to purify them. He always did this because he thought that one of them might have sinned by insulting God unintentionally.

90.4 I Seek The Protection Of The Lord

(Psalm 141)

I call to you, Lord, help me now! Listen to me when I call you.
Receive my prayer as incense, my uplifted hands as an evening sacrifice.

Lord, place a guard at my mouth, a sentry at the door of my lips.
Keep me from wanting to do wrong and from joining evil men in their wickedness.
May I never take part in their feasts.

A good man may punish me and rebuke me in kindness, but I will never accept honor from evil men, because I am always praying against their evil deeds.
When their rulers are thrown down from rocky cliffs, the people will admit that my words were true.
Like wood that is split and chopped into bits, so their bones are scattered at the edge of the grave.

But I keep trusting in you, my Sovereign Lord. I seek your protection, don't let me die!
Protect me from the traps they have set for me, from the snares of those evildoers.
May the wicked fall into their own traps while I go by unharmed.

90.3 Seek Good And Not Evil

(Amos 5:4-15)

The Lord says to the people of Israel, "Come to me, and you will live. Do not go to Beersheba to worship. Do not try to find me at Bethel- Bethel will come to nothing. Do not go to Gilgal- her people are doomed to exile."

Go to the Lord, and you will live. If you do not go, he will sweep down like fire on the people of Israel. The fire will burn up the people of Bethel, and no one will be able to put it out. You are doomed, you that twist justice and cheat people out of their rights!

The Lord made the stars, the Pleiades and Orion.
He turns darkness into daylight and day into night.
He calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the earth.
His name is the Lord.
He brings destruction on the mighty and their strongholds.

You people hate anyone who challenges injustice and speaks the whole truth in court.
You have oppressed the poor and robbed then of their grain. And so you will not live in the fine stone houses you build or drink wine from the beautiful vineyards you plant, I know how terrible your sins are and how many crimes you have committed. You persecute good men, take bribes, and prevent the poor from getting justice in the courts. And so, keeping quiet in such evil times is the smart thing to do!

Make it your aim to do what is right, not what is evil, so that you may live.  Then the Lord God Almighty really will be with you, as you claim he is. Hate what is evil, love what is right, and see that justice prevails in the courts. Perhaps the Lord will be merciful to the people of this nation who are still left alive.

90.2 Leaders Seek The Lord

(1 Chronicles 22:17-19)

David commanded all the leaders of Israel to help Solomon. He said, "The Lord your God has been with you and given you peace on all sides. He let me conquer all the people who used to live in this land, and they are now subject to you and to the Lord. Now serve the Lord your God with all your heart and soul. Start building the Temple, so that you can place in it the Covenant Box of the Lord and all the other sacred objects used in worshiping him."

90.1 Seek God In Your Distress

(Deuteronomy 4:29-31)

There you will look for the Lord your God, and if you search for him with all your heart, you will find him. When you are in trouble and all those things happen to you, then you will finally turn to the Lord and obey him. He is a merciful God. He will not abandon you or destroy you, and he will not forget the covenant that he himself made with your ancestors.

89.5 Thank God For His Love

(Psalm 100)

Sing to the Lord, all the world! Worship the Lord with joy;
come before him with happy songs!

Acknowledge that the Lord is God. He made us, and we belong to him;
we are his people, we are his flock.

Enter the Temple gates with thanksgiving; go into its courts with praise.
Give thanks to him and praise him.

The Lord is good; his love is eternal and his faithfulness lasts forever.

89.4 Jesus' Task: To Bring The Good News

(Luke 4:14-19)

Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power of the Holy Spirit was with him. The news about him spread throughout all that territory. He taught in the synagogues and was praised by everyone.

Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath he went as usual to the synagogue. He stood up to read the Scriptures and was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah, He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people."

89.3 Now We Can Go In Peace (Song of Simeon)

(Luke 2:25-32)

At that time there was a man named Simeon living in Jerusalem. He was a good, God-fearing man and was waiting for Israel to be saved. The Holy Spirit was with him and had assured him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's promised Messiah. Led by the Spirit, Simeon went into the Temple. When the parents brought the child Jesus into the Temple to do for him what the Law required, Simeon took the child in his arms and gave thanks to God:

"Now, Lord, you have kept your promise, and you may let your servant go in peace. With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples: A light to reveal your will to the Gentiles and bring glory to your people Israel."

89.2 The Good News Of Jesus' Birth

(Luke 2:8-20)

There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them, They were terribly afraid, but the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. This very day in David's town your Savior was born- Christ the Lord! And this is what will prove it to you": you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God: "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!"

When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us."

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger. When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child. All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said. Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them, The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them.

89.1 No Place For Jesus At His Birth

(Luke 2:1-7)

At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire. When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria. Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown.

Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby. She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger- there was no room for them to stay in the inn.

88.4 Praise The Goodness of the Lord

(Psalm 115)

To you alone, O Lord, to you alone, and not to us, must glory be given because of your constant love and faithfulness.

Why should the nations ask us, "Where is your God?"
Our God is in heaven; he does whatever he wishes.
Their gods are made of silver and gold, formed by human hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak, and eyes, but cannot see.
They have ears, but cannot hear, and noses, but cannot smell.
They have hands, but cannot feel, and feet, but cannot walk; they cannot make a sound.
May all who made them and who trust in them become like the idols they have made.

Trust in the Lord, you people of Israel. He helps you and protects you.
Trust in the Lord, you priests of God. He helps you and protects you.
Trust in the Lord, all you that worship him. He helps you and protects you.
The Lord remembers us and will bless us; he will bless the people of Israel and all the priests of God.
He will bless everyone who honors him, the great and the small alike.

May the Lord give you children- you and your descendants!
May you be blessed by the Lord, who made heaven and earth!

Heaven belongs to the Lord alone, but he gave the earth to man.
The Lord is not praised by the dead, by any who go down to the land of silence.
But we, the living, will give thanks to him now and forever.

Praise the Lord!

88.3 Jesus Is Great; He Will Judge

(Luke 3:15-19)

People's hopes began to rise, and they began to wonder whether John perhaps might be the Messiah. So John said to all of them, "I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. He has his winnowing shovel with him, to thresh out all the grain and gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out."

In many different ways John preached the Good News to the people and urged them to change their ways. But John reprimanded Governor Herod, because he had married Herodias, his brother's wife, and had done many other evil things.

88.2 The Liberator Comes

(Isaiah 49:8-16)

The Lord says to his people, "When the time comes to save you, I will show you favor and answer your cries for help. I will guard and protect you and through you make a covenant with all peoples.  I will let you settle once again in your land that is now laid waste. I will say to the prisoners, 'Go free!' and to those who are in darkness, 'Come out to the light!' They will be like sheep that graze on the hills; they will never be hungry or thirsty. Sun and desert heat will not hurt them, for they will be lead by one who loves them. He will lead them to springs of water.

"I will make a highway across the mountains and prepare a road for my people to travel. My people will come from far away, from the north and the west, and from Aswan in the south."

Sing heavens! Shout for joy, earth! Let the mountains burst into song! The Lord will comfort his people; he will have pity on his suffering people.

But the people of Jerusalem said, "The Lord has abandoned us! He has forgotten us." So the Lord answers, "Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? Even if a mother should forget her child, I will never forget you. Jerusalem, I can never forget you. I have written your name on the palms of my hands.

88.1 Prepare The Coming Of The Lord

(Isaiah 40:1-11)

"Comfort my people, "says our God. "Comfort them! Encourage the people of Jerusalem. Tell them they have suffered long enough and their sins are now forgiven.  I have punished them in full for all their sins."

A voice cries out, "Prepare in the wilderness a road for the Lord! Clear the way in the desert for our God! Fill every valley; level every mountain. The hills will become a plain, and the rough country will be made smooth. Then the glory of Lord will be revealed, and all mankind will see it. The Lord himself. has promised this."

A voice cries out, "Proclaim a message!" "What message shall I proclaim?" I ask. "Proclaim that all mankind are like grass: they last no longer than wild flowers. Grass withers and flowers fade when the Lord sends the wind blowing over them. People are no more enduring than grass. Yes, grass withers and flowers fade, but the word of our God endures forever."

Jerusalem, go up on a high mountain and proclaim the good news! Call out with a loud voice, Zion: announce the good news! Speak out and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah that their God is coming!

The Sovereign Lord is coming to rule with power, bringing with him the people he has rescued. He will take care of his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs together and carry them in his arms; he will gently lead their mothers.

87.4 My Sacrifice Is A Contrite Spirit

(Psalm 51:16-19)

You do not want sacrifices, or I would offer them;
You are not pleased with burnt offerings.
My sacrifice is a humble spirit, O God;
you will not reject a humble and repentant heart.

O God, be kind to Zion and help her;
rebuild the wall of Jerusalem.
Then you will be pleased with proper sacrifices
and with our burnt offerings;
and bulls will be sacrificed on your altar.

87.3 I Come To Do Your Will

(Hebrews 10:1-10)

The Jewish Law is not a full and faithful model of the real things; it is only a faint outline of the good things to come. The same sacrifices are offered forever, year after year. How can the Law, then, by means of these sacrifices make perfect the people who come to God? If the people worshiping God had really been purified from their sins, they would not feel guilty of sin anymore, and all sacrifices would stop. As it is however, the sacrifices serve year after year to remind people of their sins. For the blood of bulls and goats can never take away sins.

For this reason, when Christ was about to come into the world, he said to God: "You do not want sacrifices and offerings, but you have prepared a body for me. You are not pleased with animals burned whole on the altar or with sacrifices to take away sins. Then I said, 'Here I am, to do your will, O God, just as it is written of me in the book of the Law.'"

First he said, "You neither want nor are you pleased with sacrifices and offerings or with animals burned on the altar and the sacrifices who take away sins." He said this even though all these sacrifices are offered according to the Law. Then he said, "Here I am, O God, to do your will." So God does away with all the old sacrifices and puts the sacrifice of Christ in their place. Because Jesus Christ did what God wanted him to do, we are all purified from sin by the offering that he made of his own body once and for all.

87.2 I Want No Rams Nor Oil But Justice And Mercy

(Micah 6:6-8)

What shall I bring to the Lord, the God of heaven, when I come to worship him? Shall I bring the best calves to burn as offerings to him? Will the Lord be pleased if I bring him thousands of sheep or endless streams of olive oil? Shall I offer him my first-born child to pay for my sins? No, the Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is right, to love constantly, and to walk humbly with our God.

87.1 Do Not Offer Beasts But Do Well

(Isaiah 1:10-20)

Jerusalem, your rulers and your people are like those of Sodom and Gomorrah. Listen to what the Lord is saying to you. Pay attention to what our God is teaching you. He says, "Do you think I want all these sacrifices you keep offering to me? I have had more than enough of the sheep you burn as sacrifices and of the fat of your fine animals.  I am tired of the blood of bulls and sheep and goats. Who asked you to bring me all this when you come to worship me? Who asked you to do all this tramping around in my Temple? It's useless to bring your offerings. I am disgusted with the smell of the incense you burn. I cannot stand your New Moon Festivals, your Sabbaths, and your religious gatherings; they are all corrupted by your sins. I hate your New Moon Festivals and holy days, they are a burden that I am tired of bearing.

"When you lift your hands in prayer, I will not look at you. No matter how much you pray, I will not listen, for your hands are covered with blood. Wash yourselves clean. Stop all this evil that I see you doing. Yes, stop doing evil and learn to do right. See that justice is done- help those who are oppressed, give orphans their rights, and defend widows."

The Lord says, "Now, let's settle the matter. You are stained red with sin, but I will wash you as clean as snow. Although your stains are deep red, you will be as white as wool. If you will only obey me, you will eat the good things the land produces. But if you defy me, you are doomed to die. I, the Lord have spoken."
